A multiple system level modeling approach to coupled energy markets: Incentives for combined heat and power generation at the plant, city and regional energy system levels

The energy system can be subdivided into interconnected structural levels with differing boundary conditions and objectives. For heat power generation, these may the: electricity price area (regional); (city); production site (power plant). This work presents a multi-system modeling approach for the analysis of investments operation combined (CHP) plants, as optimized on regional, city, or level. framework, comprising three optimization models at respective levels, is applied to case study Sweden, SE3. are separately but linked through prices. results show that CHP plant both align differ, depending conditions. With low biomass moderate congestion in transmission capacity from generally align. Differences arise if increased, which impacts competitiveness plants region, while city-level mainly determined by local demand less-sensitive external changes. differences indicate risk diverging expectations between levels.
